How to tie Hemp Jewelry (Macramé)

Hi, I'm Erik and today I am going to teach you how to tie your own hemp jewelry!

It is easy and fun to make your own hemp jewelry.
The following supplies are needed:

Hemp
Hemp comes in balls of different sizes and thicknesses. #20 is small for fine work, #48 is a good all around size and #60 or #72 is real fat hemp. Hemp balls are for sale at your local craft store or hippy store or online. Usually different stores have different variety's, so check around.

Clipboard & Binder Clips
This is the secret to my success. A portable sturdy work surface with a clip on the top and binder clips to fasten hemp to the bottom of the board. I mark different inch lengths on the board so I can measure jewelry. Be sure to have extra binder clips on hand.

Scissors
Really just kid scissors work the best because they are safe and non-pointy. I fasten them to my clipboard so I don't loose them.

How to tie a square knot

Set Up:

1) Cut two lengths of hemp cord about three feet long. Fold the length of hemp cord in half and hold both cords together to form a loop.

2) Grab the top of the loop and pass it over the top of the remaining cord, leaving a hole for a knot.

5) Fasten the knot to the top of the clipboard. The left and right side cords are the tying cords and the middle two cords are the anchor cords.

Continuing the Pattern:

There are two easy ways to continue tying.

One is to continue tying the same knot over and over and end up with a spiral design. Just keep repeating steps #7 - 10 then skip to step #18 to finish.

The second way is to alternate the side that the knot is tied to create a flat design. Follow steps #12 - 15 to tie a square knot on the other side of the bracelet. Continue to tie left and right square knots then go to step #18 to finish.

12) Pass the right tying cord over the top of the two anchor cords.

16) Remembering what side to tie the next knot on is easy. Just look for what side the last bump of hemp cord is on. Just continue working on whatever side the bump is on. In this picture it is on the right hand side.

17) Continue tying until the desired length is reached. About 6-8" long is a pretty good average length.
